Top 5 Beaches In The Algarve

Known for its golden sandy beaches and clear blue seas, the Algarve is a popular haunt for those seeking a relaxing beach holiday. We’ve been on holiday to Portugal a few times over the years and had a ball over there, so I thought I’d pull together my top 5 beaches in the Algarve including the best places to sunbathe and the most idyllic beaches.

1 // Praia da Marinha, Lagoa

Praia da Marinha

With its golden sand, clear water and stunning caves, Praia da Marinha is known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve. Thanks to its remote location (you can only access it via steep steps that go down the cliffside), crowds are kept at bay, ensuring you can enjoy the beauty away from the masses! It’s a popular destination for snorkelling and if you want to get a closer look at the next-door caves, you can book a boat trip to take you over there which is highly recommended. There’s also a small beach hut serving snacks, but it’s worth taking your own food and water if you’re going to spend all day there.

2 // Praia do Ancão, Almancil

Praia do Ancão

Praia do Ancão is the place where the locals go to enjoy their time on the beach. Popular with families, this endless, golden, blue-flag stretch of sand has calm seas and most importantly a lifeguard for peace of mind if you’re holidaying with little ones. There are sunbeds, umbrellas and watersports galore, and plenty of choice for snacks and beach bars.

3 // Praia de Vale Figueira, Aljezur

Praia de Vale Figueira

One of the more remote west coast beaches, Praia de Vale Figueira is a long, wide and breathtaking stretch of whitish sand backed by picture-postcard cliffs. With nothing more than a rough, unpaved road leading towards it, it’s advisable to take your own food and water.

4 // Praia de Odeceixe, Odeceixe

Praia de Odeceixe

In the north of the region, this unique beach is definitely worth the drive. It’s located at the mouth of the Seixe river, offering something for everyone; shallow calm waters on one side ideal for families, and boisterous waves on the other. At low tide, the large sandy surface is also dotted with lagoons, which are ideal for children to play and swim in.

5 // Praia da Dona Ana, Lagos

 Praia da Dona Ana

Praia da Dona Ana is regarded as one of the most picturesque beaches of the Algarve region. The small beach is surrounded by steep, colourful cliffs and the golden sands are lapped by crystal clear waters – in a nutshell, it’s stunning! Situated within walking distance of central Lagos, Praia da Dona Ana makes for an ideal location for a day on the beach.
